Fabianski v Ludo
Having seen Fabianski ridiculously voted greatest West Ham keeper ever on claret and Hugh (I know, I know). I was surprised to see Martin Samuel (the highly regarded West Ham supporting sports writer - albeit now working for the daily mail) specifically mention Fabs injury in his weekly column. In the article he states quite emphatically that Fabianski is the best keeper since Phil Parkes....do others agree with that?

For me, I just about remember the Valentine’s Day massacre losing 6-0 to Luton and not much else of that time. My dad has all the programmes from the 60s - 90s that I always enjoyed reading, so I know that Ludo came in soon after that defeat (was it the next game?).

My first season ticket started from Boxing Day 1990 & no keeper has come close to Ludo since then in my opinion. I’m a bit uncomfortable with Fabianski being rated alongside such company, but I do agree he is a fantastic keeper. I agree he has very little comparison in the last 20 years, though the same can be said for Rice & Haller.

I’d be interested in what the old school supporters think of Fabianski in comparison to the legendary Goalkeepers we’ve had since the 1960s.

Personally I feel he’s still got a long way to go before I see him as superior to Ludo.

Re: Fabianski v Ludo
I think goalkeepers are looked at differently than outfield players it is a generational thing to many, my favourite will always be Parks cos he was quite brilliant, but to compare a goally from the 70's and 80's to today is not possible in my opinion the goalkeepers these days are far fitter more agile and more athletic but the fitness is a big deal , saying that when you look back to keepers like Shilton Clemence Parks Southall Seeman and quite a few others it is true to say that English keepers have been pretty average and have not moved on they were some of the best in the world .
If I look at Parks and Fabianski objectively Fabs is the better keeper no doubt things move forward and he is one of our best players ever.

Re: Fabianski v Ludo
Fabianski had a great season last year and is an excellent keeper, way better than the nervy reserve he was at Arsenal. He's been an absolutely fantastic buy for us so far.

There was a Ludo versus Parkesy thread on here a few weeks back. But for me, Ludo at his peak was the best as he was so strong coming off his line and on crosses. His form did dip towards the end of his time with us, I think at least partially caused through injuries.

Parkes was also a superb keeper. He had such presence due to his size and for a bloke of his build, had fantastic reflexes. If he were playing now, he'd be England's first choice with some ease - Pickford doesn't even come close!

I wouldn't put Fabianski with either of these two yet, but if he retains his consistency for a couple more seasons plus, then why not.

I'd go with that, maybe Day sneaking ahead of Green on those fabulous two years. Pity his form dropped. Poor bloke had the worst surname possible for headline makers.

Re: Fabianski v Ludo
Ludo was my hero as a kid growing up as a goalkeeper but he came a bit unstuck by the introduction of the backpass rule. He was a great shot stopper, commanded his area in an era of the game with more high crosses into the box and had a huge drop kick out of his hands playing on a smaller pitch at Upton Park, so it’s difficult to compare him to Fabianski because they play in such different times. It’s difficult to know whether Parkes could have played in different generations. Fab makes some great reflex saves and gives great confidence to the team, but it’s hard to compare on a like for like basis.

Re: Fabianski v Ludo
West Ham's greatest goalkeeper was Ernie Gregory without any doubt.
West Ham's best goalkeeper Phil Parkes also said of Gregory "He was a legend pure and simple"

If you don't know why you need to find out.

I saw them both but my all time favourite was Lawrie Leslie he was West Ham's bravest goalie

He's now injured And impossible to find a replacement.

Deano, you need to remember that the people voting are a very different generation.

My own favourite goalie is Mervyn Day for a quite brilliant two year period - before he, for some reason, became a bit shit. I still wonder why as he was tipped as the next England GK.

Bobby Ferguson wasn't bad for a small goalie, Jim Standen was solid but big Phil Parkes was the best, Fabianski is a very close second

Re: Fabianski v Ludo
As said, always difficult to compares era's, but fwiw Fab is better than Ludo. Ludo was a bit of a showman but wasn't an all round top class keeper imo, made plenty of ricks towards the end of his time with us. Fab is a proper keeper with no real weaknesses.

Re: Fabianski v Ludo
Ludo was a good goalkeeper, but Fabianski is a different level.

I said this last season, and got caned for it. I also said I wouldn't swap him at this moment in time for any goalkeeper in the Prem, once again got caned, but I stand by it. He's different class.

Ludo at the moment. He made some mistakes and so will Fabianski if he’s here as long as Ludo is. Ludo was an incredible shot stopper and had great command of his area.

I’ve been going since 78,in my opinion our best 3 keepers I’ve seen are Parkes,Green & Fabianski in that order.I never rated Ludo, but I met him at Steve Potts testimonial dinner, and he’s a lovely bloke.

Re: Fabianski v Ludo
As said it’s a different game for keepers these days dealing with kicking more.
Ludo was great for us but you don’t think of him using his feet.
Fabianski has been excellent in that you think of him as secure and struggle to recall errors or terrible mistakes.
Can remember there was a game towards the end of last season where he came out for a ball towards the edge of the area on the side and it bounced over his head.
The crowd GASPED as it was so unexpected

Agree with that. Well part from the fact my first match was 1977.
